CUSTOM FIT SOCKS
INSTRUCTOR: KATE ATHERLEY
1 LESSONS, 2 HOURS TOTAL
TUESDAY, JULY 3, 6-8PM
COST: $20
Liberate yourself from pattern books! Learn how to create a top-down or toe-up sock pattern for any yarn, and for any foot, and how to make your own design customizations like pattern stitches and colourwork. I show how to create a custom-fit sock pattern for any foot and any yarn, using gauge information and two key measurements (ankle circumference and foot length). I cover both top-down and toe-up styles. The basic top-down pattern template uses a band heel with a gusset. The basic toe-up template uses a short-row heel with gusset. I'll cover how to modify the basic templates for special fit needs -- for wide or narrow ankles, for very pointy or wide toes, for knee & over-the-knee lengths -- and for pattern stitches and colourwork. I'll also discuss choosing yarns for socks -- what to look for in a yarn that's not specifically designed for socks. Knitters must have worked at least one pair of socks. materials required: bring paper, pencil, a tape measure and a calculator homework required: optional - a roughly 5 by 5 inch swatch in the round using the yarn you wish to design a sock for; if it's sock yarn, use the needles recommended on the ball band; if it's non-sock yarn, use needles a couple of sizes smaller.

CABLES 101

Bring some scrap yarn - worsted weight or heavier --and needles to match. Suitable for novice knitters - as long as you can knit and purl, you can cable.

CABLING WITHOUT A CABLE NEEDLE
INSTRUCTOR: KATE ATHERLEY
1 LESSON, 2 HOURS TOTAL
TUESDAY, MAY 15, 6-8PM
COST: $20

Speed up your cable knitting and expand your skills by learning to work cables without a cable needle. class details: We work through a variety of swatches, starting with 2-stitch "mock cables", and knit-over-purl twists, and then move up to multi-stitch cables.  Emphasis is on practising the technique.  I also discuss yarn and project types that lend themselves to abandoning the cable needle, and those that don't (i.e. wool or yarns with some friction are better than fibres like silk). skill level: Suitable for a newer knitter, but they must have worked one cabled project. materials required: bring scrap yarn in a light colour and matching needles - worsted or aran weight and 5mm needles is recommended

SWEETLY WORN SHAWL
INSTRUCTOR: NATALIE SELLES
1 LESSON, 2 HOURS TOTAL
FRIDAY, MAY 18, 6-8PM
COST: $26 INCLUDES PATTERN (STUDENT NEEDS 3MM CIRCULAR NEEDLE 24" OR LONGER)

A perfect first shawl pattern. Very easy to knit, but just enough interesting changes to keep you going! It is easy to get entranced by a beautiful skein or two of handdyed sock yarn, but it can sometimes be hard to decide what to do with them later. Socks can seem like a waste, and a tendency to pool makes them difficult to work with. This simple shawl stripes a solid and handpainted yarn together to break up pooling and showcase colour. Let your sock yarns realize their true potential! Materials: two socks yarns that compliment each other, one solid, one variegated.
